Lori Andrews Contact: www.LoreneAndrews.com - landrews@iwaynet.net Artist's Statement: Five years after graduating from CCAD with a degree in Illustration, I discovered the medium of wood. Wood has all the working properties I couldn't find in other sculptural mediums - strong for delicate parts but lights in weight to allow support of the sculpture without armatures. By using a variety of power rotary tools, I can carve a variety of wood species both domestic and exotic as well as other materials like bone, sotne and rubber composites (golf balls). Imperfections or highly figured grain that would make carving by hand difficult can be instead incorporated into the look of the finished piece. In all of my carvings, I try to capture the form and texture of the subject as realistically as possible. If the wood is interesting, the carving is left natural with only a clear finish to bring out the character of the wood. Carvings I intend to paint or stain are carved out of basswood (Linden) or tupelo (black gum). These woods are softer and hold find detail well but are rather plain left in their natural state. Though I occationally still do illustrations for children's books, science-fiction/fantasy or commissioned painting of pets, most of my ideas are for carvings. Accomplishments: Since 1993, Lori has won more than sixty awards in such prestigious shows as From Tree to Treasures-Columbus: Marcon 31: Artistry in Wood-Dayton: Wonders in Wood -Dover: and has completed with other mediums at the Westerville Art League and the Integrity Insurance Art Show. Lori's awards include 7 Best of Show, 11 Best of Category; 26 First in Class; 7 Second in class; and 1 People's Choice. Lori teaches power carving, pyrography (wood burning) and picture framing at Woodcraft in Hilliard, Ohio.
